Sainsbury's reports 'better-than-expected' rise in sales

According to the supermarket chain, it saw a better-than-expected increase during the year, even though the economic climate was "challenging".

Marketing Week magazine reports that Sainsbury's saw a nine per cent rise in underlying pre-tax profit in the 12 months leading to March 19th.

This was a profit of £665 million. Total sales rose by seven per cent, netting the supermarket chain £22.9 billion.

Like-for-like sales rose by 2.3 per cent over the year, reports Marketing Week magazine.

"Strong sales growth, combined with productivity savings and tight control on operating costs, have helped to deliver good profit growth," said Justin King, Sainsbury's chief executive officer.
