Rural SMEs 'not considered in broadband plans'

Computer Weekly magazine subscription holders can read how SMEs in rural areas are being neglected in broadband plans.

If you're a tech whizz with a Computer Weekly magazine subscription, you can read how rural small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are apparently not being considered in the UK's broadband plans.

By 2015, the government hopes superfast broadband will feature in all areas around the country.

However, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), it is not taking SMEs seriously.

John Walker, national chairman of the FSB, said: "The government has said there is no business case for providers to set up broadband in rural areas, but for rural firms it is essential that they have access to reliable broadband to expand their businesses, grow and innovate so they can take on new members of staff and generate income for the economy," reports Computer Weekly magazine.

All regions, except London, have problems accessing broadband and insufficient speeds there, the FSB suggested.

The coalition has announced it will be bringing out a £50 million pilot scheme which puts local communities in charge of their internet infrastructure.
