Retail sales grew in January, despite ongoing economic woes

Marketing Week magazine subscription holders can read how retail sales improved in January.

With a Marketing Week magazine subscription you'll be able to read how retail sales grew in January, despite consumers feeling slightly pessimistic about the year ahead.

The publication has reported data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) which revealed there was 2.3 per cent growth in sales last month.

Like-for-like sales reversed the 0.7 per cent drop seen in January last year, Marketing Week magazine reported.

Total sales rose 4.2 per cent, compared to just a 1.2 per cent increase in January last year, the data from the BRC showed.

However, Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, warned the sales were higher than expected and said shoppers could still be hit by economic pressures this year, reports Marketing Week magazine.

The BRC is the leading trade association within the retail sector.

It represents the interests of all sellers, from large firms, to small retailers, with some based in rural areas, while others are located in cities.
