At a debate hosted by the University of Westminster, media professionals and students argued that PR is not to blame for a lack of trust in politics.
Kevin Maguire, associate editor at the Daily Mirror, said at the debate that his "trade has played a part" in the undermining of public trust in politicians, reports PR Week magazine.
With the expenses scandal last year, which seems to be lingering on with Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper facing the fine toothcomb at the moment, the media has drawn attention to the problems in politics.
However, Mr Maguire said spin and PR are more to blame.
"I've seen it, I've been a witness to it for 25 years, it's got worse. It was happening in the Thatcher era, it got worse under Labour and it’s happening now," he said at the debate.
