News of the World closing after phone scandal

The News of the World have announced that they are ceasing publication after the phone hacking allegations.

By now we are all well aware of the reports on the News of the World phone hacking scandal. The stories of hacking into the voicemails of Milly Dowler, Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, relatives of 7/7 bombing victims as well as numerous celebrities have been splashed across every news outlet for the past few days.

After public outrage and the loss of the majority of their advertising deals, News International have decided that it’s time for News of the World to call it a day and the newspaper will cease publication on Sunday 10th July.

BBC News have been running a live report on the scandal, keeping readers constantly updated. Over the last 24 hours David Cameron has promised that two inquiries will be held into the validity of the claim, numerous advertisers have reviewed their relationships and a few hours ago James Murdoch released a statement to staff announcing the paper’s closure.

The chairman of News International stated: "When I tell people why I am proud to be part of News Corporation, I say that our commitment to journalism and a free press is one of the things that sets us apart. Your work is a credit to this.

"The good things the News of the World does, however, have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong. Indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our Company.”

Whilst many people will be pleased to hear this news, some News of the World readers may be disappointed to hear that one of their favourite publications will be no longer. If that’s the case then check out our fantastic range of newspapers, such as The Daily Mail & The Mail On Sunday.
