Could Japan's neighbours be affected by Fukushima?

If you've got a Time magazine subscription, you can read all about the Fukushima power plant in Japan.

Time magazine subscription holders can find out how the recent events in Japan are likely to impact on its neighbouring countries.

Last week, Japan was rocked by one of the biggest earthquakes ever seen in the world, measuring at least 8.9 on the Richter scale.

Since then, the damage has been catastrophic; with thousands of people feared dead and hundreds more reported missing.

The earthquake, which sparked a tsunami, caused Fukushima power plant to explode as well and Time magazine has looked at the effects this could have on Japan's neighbours.

Radiation levels are stable so far in Taiwan, according to Time magazine's reports from the country's Atomic Energy Council.

Due to the prevalent winds, the nation is unlikely to see radioactive smoke wafted its way, claims Hsu Ming-te, deputy director of the energy council's Department of Nuclear Regulation.

Checks for radiation exposure are being carried out in the Philippines as well.

"We're monitoring the ambient air four times daily and, if needed, our response teams will do checks in other parts of the country," Alumanda dela Rosa from the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute told Time magazine.
