Biggest-spending advertisers revealed

Marketing Week subscription holders can see which companies splashed the most cash on marketing and advertising in 2010, and judge whether they think it paid off.

Anyone with a Marketing Week magazine subscription can find out who the biggest advertising spenders of 2010 were.

Figures from the Nielsen Company show that Proctor & Gamble topped the list, spending £195 million last year compared to £158 million in 2009.

The firm was followed by British Sky Broadcasting which spent £168 million, and Unilever which splashed £135 million.

Supermarket giant Tesco and the Central Office of Information, which topped the list the previous year, completed the top five, spending £125 million and £113 million respectively.

Asda, BT, DFS, Reckitt Benckiser and Kelloggs all featured in the top ten.

Overall, UK firms spent a massive £1.84 billion on advertising over 2010, despite gloomy reports of companies slashing their marketing budgets due to unfavourable economic conditions.

The list takes account of all internet, direct mail and door drop spend until October 31st, press, radio, cinema and outdoor spend for the year to November 30th; and TV advertising spend until December 5th.
