To appreciate the full flavour of ‘The Friend’, it’s best read in a comfy chair with a hot cup of tea and lots of time to spare.
Founded back in 1869, The People’s Friend magazine is a British weekly magazine published by D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd and carries the cover tagline ‘The famous story magazine”.
Mainly aimed at older women, The People’s Friend magazine is principally a traditionalist magazine in outlook. Every issue contains at least six selt-contained short stories and at least two serials. There is always a craft project for the readers to turn their hand to and various factual articles, one of which is a piece of a particular town.
The People’s Friend magazine also holds an annual craft competition called “The Love Darg”, which is a Scottish term for a day’s work done without asking for payment. Readers are asked to make toys and garments suitable for children which are distributed to children’s charities after the judging has taken place.
CUSTOMER REVIEWS FOR THE PEOPLE'S FRIEND MAGAZINE
I love this magazine. It's full of really entertaining, uplifting stories that make me feel good no matter what kind of day I'm having. And at a time when I hardly dare leave a newspaper lying around for fear of what my young grandchildren might see, I have no such worries with The People's Friend. It's good for when I'm helping them with their homework, too, because unlike so many modern magazines, the spelling and grammar are still spot on.
This is a very good magazine, filled mainly with fiction reads. There are a lot of short stories and usually one or two serials. However, there are also informative articles. Therre is often an informative article about the location on the cover - the only disadvantage being it is mainly Scotland, and if you don't live in scotland, it seems a waste of the rest of our lovely isles. There are some cooking articles and also about financial aspects. One very good feature is the medical column, and there are also a few puzzles, but not much variety. Fortunately (for me), it does not focus on beauty, fashion, subjects that are heavily covered by more expensive glossies.
